Project Overview
OSxCAR Initiative: Redefining software-based mobility
The OSxCAR Initiative, driven by the Middleware & DevOps team in Wuppertal, Germany, is a pioneering platform for transforming Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture. Based on W3C standards, OSxCAR is hardware-, operating system-, and processor-agnostic, enabling seamless deployment on CPUs, GPUs, MCUs, and TEEs – all with a single binary.
In a Nutshell
- Architectural Freedom: Software reusable and portable – independent of hardware & OS.
- Realistic Testing: Development "as in production" instead of in artificial silos.
- Efficiency & Impact: Shorter cycles, better utilization, data-driven decisions, measurable quality.
Open & Modular
Clear interfaces and replaceable components keep systems adaptable instead of fragile.
Production-Ready
Tests on real target architectures – reproducible, scalable, remote.
AI-Powered
Learning from data: optimization of latencies, placement, and resources.
Secure & Interoperable
Isolated execution environments and standards create trust and speed.
Key Features
- Unified Binary Execution One binary for MIL, SIL, HIL, VIL, and production environments
- Microcontroller-Compatible Containers Lightweight, modular containers for resource-constrained systems
- Secure WebAssembly Sandboxes ASIL-qualified and compliant with ISO 21434 and ISO 26262
- Shadow Mode Testing Safe, real-world validation of new ECU algorithms parallel to production code
- AI-Powered Optimization Intelligent resource allocation for compute and network
- Fast Test Bench Setup From months to minutes – scalable SDV architecture deployment
What Changes Concretely?
Today (Status Quo)
Highly encapsulated devices, many special paths, test environments differ from production, long rebuild times & resource conflicts, gut-feeling decisions, integration risks & vendor lock-in
Tomorrow (with OSxCAR)
Modular software building blocks with clear contracts, production-like tests on real target hardware, remotely reconfigurable bench with time-sharing, data-/AI-driven architecture and placement decisions, standards & interoperability as default
Cross-Industry Impact
OSxCAR is not limited to automotive. The architecture supports:- Robotics
- Avionics
- Medical Devices
- Cloud Infrastructure
Guiding Principles
- Simple over complex: Solutions must remain maintainable.
- Contracts over implicit assumptions: Interfaces are explicit, versioned, testable.
- Security from day 1: Isolation, least privileges, traceable artifact chain.
- Measure, don't guess: Quality and performance are made visible.
- Prefer standards: Interoperability beats custom paths.
What OSxCAR Is Not
- Not a proprietary lock – standards and openness are part of the goal.
- Not a feature firework – reliable core competency takes precedence over "nice-to-have".
- Not a lab island – production readiness is the standard, not the exception.
